Pretty much this.
And I saw this non-Japanese HSJ fan (either working or studying in Japan, idk) complaining about how there will be more international fans there from now on and talking about them badly, as if she herself wasn't from the international fandom.
Living in Japan won't make you Japanese.
And non-Japanese fan =/= automatically bad behavior and breaking all the rules. You can find good and bad fans in every fandom, even the Japanese one.

what's demachi?

Re: Secret 04

(Anonymous)

2013-02-16 04:26 pm (UTC) (Link)

It's the Japanese fans in contact with the FC/organizers who instruct others to uphold the don't-talk-about-it rule, actually, since if too many people know about it they will (and DO) cancel it. If you don't follow the Japanese fans' rules and they find out, you are taken away from the premises and/or banned, and if the FC finds out you risk losing your membership/being blacklisted from events. It's not some omg want to be speshul~*~ clique, it's just the rules - which, as you know, are important in Japanese fandoms. It's not a secret, per se; people talk about demachi on television and so on. Of course it's known to exist, but usually without any accompanying 'how-to' (such as where and when to go, etc). Japanese fandom is self-policing; the reason demachi CAN exist is because fans keep each other in line so the jimusho can trust them to behave properly. In International fandom there's a pervasive ~idgaf about rules~ attitude (just look at all our filesharing) so it's not really a surprise that people who are in both fandoms get anxious if demachi is discussed openly, because of the increased chances of someone who doesn't give a fuck about rules showing up and causing trouble for everyone.

For the record, no, NOBODY has the 'right' to meet their idol. Not even the people who DO do demachi have that right. They don't have to come out to meet fans. Sometimes they don't, or they flat-out ignore the fans and walk on past. None of us have the RIGHT to talk to them. This sounds really fussy, I know, but people acting like idols are commodities smacks of ingratitude. They're working individuals; demachi is almost the equivalent of overtime. They do it because they're semi-compelled to by the fans waiting for them to go home, not because it's in their job description.

If you're someone who can follow rules at the right time and not be an idiot then I hope you can meet your idol sometime, if you haven't already. But can you imagine what it would be like if everyone who attended an event did demachi? How much organization it would require? How tired the boys would be, to have that on top of having just completed a show? Sure, of course it's unfair that some people know and some don't. Demachi exists in every show-based fandom - even Justin Bieber tweets photos of people who wait for him. But Japanese fandom = Japanese fandom's rules. Even if you think it's dumb, it is how it is for the reasons they provide, and there's no way a few indignant foreign fans can change that.

(Yes, I realize I'm breaking the 'don't talk about it on the internet' rule by leaving this comment. Sorry for the hypocrisy. I see so much 'lol u elitist bitches' talk that I really wanted to have the chance to present an alternative view just the once. :/)

What are you talking about!? Demachi happens after every stage show. Of course it varies what they do afterwards. They only made a big deal about these (Johnny's World) because they were/did film them. Quit trying to make yourself feel important. Those Japanese girls you are talking about at the show are just self appointed busybodies trying to make themselves look good. Nobody asked them and anybody could do what they are doing.

See? This is what she said In International fandom there's a pervasive ~idgaf about rules~ attitude
Stop acting like you know everything while you know nothing yet condemning others.
Those Japanese girls you are talking about at the show are just self appointed busybodies trying to make themselves look good
Busybodies? If they don't organize the fans no one can meet their idols or it would turn into chaos. They organize fan and some of them even protect the boys from oriki and yarakashi on their way to train station. Every fandom has it's own rules. Don't expect everything is the same as the fandom in your country.
Quit trying to make yourself feel important
We should thank her for telling us this kind of thing (while taking the risk of breaking the rules) because not everyone knows it.
All we can do is respect and follow the rules because, yes, they blacklist some fans from events.
You have no choice but to keep quiet from talking and being labelled as elitist bitches.

I got to participate in a demachi one time. The fans who were running it were very helpful, handing out note paper because everyone had to have a letter to give, explaining how it was going to work, holding out bags for letters so the idols in question could shake hands, they were nervous as hell though because they were obviously under pressure to make sure it ran smoothly. They were pretty serious when it finished, we were lead out of an exit and they held a mini meeting which was basically thank you for your time, please observe all fan rules until they got confirmation from security that the idols had safely left.

I get that international fans want to join in but they seem to forget that it is a pretty big ask from the idols, security and venue staff.

Re: Secret 04

2013-02-17 02:09 pm (UTC) (Link)

You've just said a lot of what I've wanted to say for a while but never knew if I should. Thank you.

Even the most well-intentioned fan can cause the organizers a hassle if they don't have a good understanding of Japanese language or fan culture, but the ones who blatantly disregard the rules are the real problem. And sadly, there's a good number of foreign fans who seem to think that the rules don't apply to them because they are foreign. I also hope that everyone has a chance to meet their idol, but it needs to be done while respecting the rules, the idols, and the Japanese fans. Otherwise it just makes foreign fans look bad and jeopardizes something a lot of fans work hard for so that other fans can enjoy.

And anyone who thinks it's easy to organize hundreds of fans into neat, orderly lines and keep demachi running smoothly has no idea the effort that those girls put into it. You couldn't pay me to deal with that on a nightly basis.

AYRT

Thank you for your comment ♥ While there are definitely plenty of badly-behaved Japanese fans - the term yarakashi already exists in Japanese for a reason, after all - you are completely right that foreign fans need to behave better than average, if only because one misbehaving foreign fan runs the risk of making all foreign fans look disrespectful/unpredictable/rude. >< And yeah, there's no way I'd want to deal with the pressure of keeping fans organised, negotiating with the jimusho and dealing with yarakashi the way the fan leaders do... :/

Re: Secret 04

Everyone wants to meet their idols. I think we can all understand that. But I think demachi are a horrible way to go about it. I am personally of the opinion that demachi should be done away with or made official in some sense (like a lottery at the event which determines a certain section or rows that are welcome to attend or an invitation sent out with random tickets). That way it can be regulated in a way that will cause less stress for organizers and the idols.

The fact that demachi are supposed to be a secret and that the rules and how-tos are not shared does sort of create an 'omg want to be speshul~*~ clique' not that I would call it that per say. The system very much creates a very clear in-group and out-group. The 'elites' who get to know about it and the 'others' who don't. And I don't think that is very fair to fans who are part of the out-group. You don't seem to think it's fair either but claim those are the Japanese rules. But what rule gives someone the right to know and not others? And who gets to pick who gets told and who doesn't? I do think it is elitist that there is a system in place that allows those in the 'know' to get a chance to meet their idols while leaving out others.

I get that the whole point behind the 'only some people get to know' idea is that it will indeed be canceled if too many people show up. But, bitching that if too many people know about it, it will be canceled shows the same sort of 'I have a right to meet my idol' attitude that you find so distasteful. 'I have a right to know about the event because I have a right to meet my idol' isn't much different from 'I have a right to meet my idol, so don't tell anyone about the event so that they don't cancel it' to me. Hence why I think the whole thing should be done away with or made official and known to all but have attendance limited to a random group of people.

I won't even touch on the whole International fan thing. You can't paint all international fans with the same brush and fear of potential rule breaking shouldn't essentially bar anyone from an event.

I think the word demachi is being misused and it certainly isn't a new thing. It happens at lots of stage performances all over the world. It's just when you wait at the end of a show for the actors to leave and say good bye and try to get an autograph or give presents or fan letters. The thing that was special about Johnny's World's demachi was that since it was cold they let the girls wait inside and talk with the boys in an organized environment. Personally I think it was mostly done so they could film it for TV because in all the demachi I've seen after other Johnny's shows it's never been so nicely done.

What kind of elitist do you mean?
Like in terms of sharing files and info or they start to bitch other fans?
Have you ever tried to talk to them?
IMO as for sharing files, they exist when people break the rules. Who want to share file if people give no damn to their rules?
It happened in every fandom, just that when it comes to small fandom, they're visible.
For me, the real elitist bitches are the ones who start to attack others.

not OP, but what I gather from secret is more the idea of "elitist" as snobby, or uptight as in "your group is only "good" because they have so many fanbrats out there buying their stuff." or "clearly you people haven't got any real taste in music because these guys are amazing and you are incapable of appreciating them" or something like that?
